Rainbow

Live in Munich 1977 DVD

Review by Gary Hill

In my opinion the quintessential Rainbow album is Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll. Well, this DVD opens with “Kill the King” from that album and we also get the title track. You just don’t get much better than that. But the thing is, that’s not the only joy to be found here. Captured at their prime Rainbow make their way through a blistering set of some of the music that truly made them great. Besides that you get Ronnie James Dio and Cozy Powell playing alongside Ritchie Blackmore – what more could you ask for?

Well, to fill in any blanks you might have added at that question mark, there are a number of bonus features including four music videos, interviews, audio commentary and a photo gallery. The show is top-notch, and then there are these extras. It just doesn’t get any better than this. Plus you get not only one, but two booklets. The first is general information about the band and this DVD. The second is a reproduction of the tour program from the gig. What a classy package this is. If you like Rainbow’s style of ‘70’s hard rocking music – before they tried their hand at the more pop oriented side of things – this is a “must have.”
