Slipknot

Maggots DVD

Review by Gary Hill

This series of biography videos is a mixed lot – some border towards the very good end (none reaching great) and some border close to the bad category. The truth is all of them have some redeeming qualities. Another thing they all have in common is being unauthorized. That last part means that not only can the producers not use the group’s actual music, but they have no real interviews with band members except archival footage. This fact (more than any other) is what prevents any of these from reaching the great level. I have to say that the music (while not Slipknot music) on this DVD is certainly better than the tunes on a lot of them. As to the documentary itself, this one is sort of middle of the road. As one who has not really followed the band I found a lot of it to be interesting – but nothing earth shattering. To give an overall rating of the whole DVD I’d have to put it on the good end of so-so. Certainly completist fans will want this, and for the casual metal fan who wants to know a bit about this history of Slipknot, I’d probably recommend it, but let them know that this is not exceptionally good, but only moderately so.
