Bang Your Head!!! Festival DVD

Review by Greg Olma

Ah, summer in Europe; the warm weather, the tourists, and most of all the Heavy Metal festivals. The poor American metal fan has to suffer through Ozzfest while the European audiences get fests that bring together many name acts for a weekend of good music. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Bang Your Head !!! Festival, they decided to put out this 2 DVD set. Locomotive has done a good job on putting this package together. I don’t know if all the artists are represented here but I can’t see anyone being left off. There are so many groups that it may take more than one sitting to watch both disks. Where else but in Europe could you get Motorhead, Exciter, Jag Panzer, Doro, and Twisted Sister on one stage? I don’t think any festival is complete without Saxon being on the bill and this one is no different. The only odd thing about this package is that some bands get 3 songs while others get only 1. This makes it a bit frustrating if you really like a band but I’m sure record label politics had more to do with that than anything else.

For the bonus features we get behind the scenes footage along with some additional video of the show but none of those are full songs. It is good for one viewing but I can’t see anyone wanting to check it out more than that. On disc one you also get a couple of songs from a Nasty Savage club show. The footage looks good but the sound has a real bootleg feel to it. Even though the sound suffers a little, it is still something I watched a few times. That is at least worthwhile bonus material. I have never really purchased any DVD based solely on the bonus material, so based on the strength of the main feature I would recommend this package.
