Homecoming - The Greatest Hits Live in Glasgow DVD

Review by Gary Hill

This video (recorded in 2001, but released in 2005) captures a "homecoming" concert by Nazareth to their hometown of Glasgow. This one is excellent both in terms of sound and video quality. While this video documents the band past their heyday, it's obvious from watching that they are far from past their prime. Indeed, I saw this band several times in the 1970's and those shows had nothing on this one. The group does songs from their entire career, and there is some exceptionally strong stuff here. Truly nothing is what you would call "weak", but some songs are stronger than others. My personal favorites here are "Beggar's Day" and "This Flight Tonight".

While the band only features two original members by this point (this is still the current lineup), it doesn't seem to affect the sound or the crowd one bit. The audience reacts enthusiastically to the killer show. I guess I would have to say that my one real complaint is that I wish there was more music. This also includes a 20-minute or so interview segment with all members of the band in which they discuss the history and future of the group. One more nice touch - they include a live CD of the concert with the DVD. The cover says "1 DVD for the home" and "1 CD for your car". Now that's a cool bonus!

This one is sure to be a hit with long-time fans of the band. This chronicle of the hard rocking outfit includes many of their biggest hits, including "Holiday", "Hair of the Dog" and, of course "Love Hurts". Those cuts should mean that anyone interested in checking these guys out might not be able to find a much better starting point than here, either.
