Saga

Silhouette DVD

Review by Gary Hill

As an American, Saga always seemed to be a one hit wonder band known for the track "On The Loose" that was in fairly heavy rotation in the early days of MTV. Little did I know that the Toronto based group was actually quite successful throughout much of the world based on their strong keyboard based (with two keyboardists how could they not be), quirky brand of progressive rock.

This DVD serves as a great introduction to the band for the uninitiated like myself, and should also be a treat for the Saga diehards. It consists of three sections, the first of which is a collection of ten music videos, including, of course, the aforementioned MTV darling. Many of these videos look dated and naïve, but it was the 80's, and it is still quite cool to see them.

The second segment of the video is a live concert, which really does show that this group is a prog force to be reckoned with. The concert film is well shot, and has great sound, and the band put in a solid performance. Finally an interview with the band from the year 2002 is presented, and it showcases the entire story of Saga - the Saga saga, if you can forgive the pun.

All in all, this video serves as a great introduction to those like myself who are unfamiliar with this band. I know I will be checking out more of their stuff out now that I know what I have been missing.
