David Sanborn

Live at Montreux 1984 DVD

Review by Gary Hill

These Live In Montreux DVD’s are just plain great. There’s not really a weak one in the bunch – although some are better than others. I really like this one a lot. David Sanborn’s style of jazz works very well in the live venue and the video and sound are top-notch as always. For me one of the highlights is the appearance of Rickie Lee Jones. The whole band is great, though and these guys just produce one killer jazz song after another without ever sounding redundant or trite. There’s not much in the way of bonus materials, but what is there is darned good, too – some songs from Sanborn’s appearance at the festival in 1981. All in all this is a fine collection that should please Sanborn’s hardcore fans, the more casual ones and even serve as a good introduction to this talented musician.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2009  Volume 2 at lulu.com/strangesound.
