The Six Wives Of Henry VIII:Live at Hampton Court Palace DVD

Review by Gary Hill

There can be a perception, when an artist releases a number of live DVD’s, that they are going to the well a bit too often and running out of water. Well, if one were to get that idea about Rick Wakeman and overlook this new release it would be a mistake. This is quite probably the finest DVD Wakeman has ever released – and likely ever will.  A companion to the CD reviewed in this issue, this is the video recording of the 2009 concerts wherein Wakeman and company recreate his monumental Six Wives of Henry VIII album – with some additional tracks not originally found on the disc.

I’ve already reviewed the music in the set, so let’s look instead at the videography and overall production. This is a stellar release. The filming and sound are both excellent – but, then again, they were done with modern equipment. The whole performance really shines and the cameras do a great job of capturing it, without getting in the way. If you have other Wakeman DVD’s, you still need this one. If you haven’t yet purchased any of his releases on DVD I’d say that there really is no better place to start than here.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2009  Volume 6 at lulu.com/strangesound.
