Joan Armatrading

Steppin’ Out – Greatest Hits Live DVD

Review by Gary Hill

What a cool performance this is. I remember hearing Armatrading way back when and being impressed. I didn’t remember why until now. Her blend of rock, jazz and even progressive rock is enthralling and the whole group put in an excellent live performance. Filmed in 1980 the sound and video quality might not be up to the standards today’s viewers expect, but they are quite good. Of course, this was filmed for German television – so that helps in that regard. The concert is over an hour in length and they also include an interview as a bonus item. This DVD would be a great introduction to this vibrant artist and for long time fans it’s highly recommended.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2010  Volume 2 at lulu.com/strangesound.
