Dream Theater

Metropolis 2000: Scenes From New York DVD

Review by Greg Olma

Dream Theater never do anything half way.  They created the masterpiece Metropolis: Scenes From A Memory and then decided to play the whole thing on tour.  I saw them at a couple of stops on this tour and the shows were both visually and audibly stunning.  This DVD is a souvenir of their New York on August 30, 2000 and unlike their previous DVDs, this is a concert video without the inter-song distractions.  Instead, they include that stuff in the bonus material (where it belongs).  The show consists of the entire Scenes From A Memory disc with all the bell and whistles.  The footage is shot nicely without those annoying cut-aways that were all the rage for concert videos in the 90’s.  If you were not fortunate enough to witness this tour in person, this DVD is the next best thing.  I’ve watched it a number of times and it gets better with each viewing.

I know that I’m not that big on bonus material, but on this disc you get some great footage of additional songs including the 25 minute version of “A Change Of Seasons.” There are some interviews and behind-the-scenes footage, but that pales in comparison to the bonus songs.  With so much video output from Dream Theater, I had to ask myself if this was one of the better releases.  After watching it again, I would have to say that it does rise above some of their other DVD releases.
