Some Girls - Live in Texas '78 BluRay

Review by Gary Hill

This is a killer video! I’ve always loved the Some Girls album, it’s one of my favorite Stones discs, and they play a lot of music from that album. In addition we get some Exile On Main Street tunes along with some covers and other hits. The band were at the top of their game, combining old school rock and roll with punk rock. Of course, it’s the Stones brand of punk, and they really were punk in a lot of ways (the straightforward roots rock influences and pull no punches attitude) before there was such a thing as punk rock. Of course, they touch on disco with “Miss You” (really only the bass line is disco on that tune) and country with “Girl With the Far Away Eyes.” This is a great concert.

In addition the video and audio quality are excellent. There are some cool bonuses, too. There’s a new interview with Mick Jagger (from 2011) talking about this tour and release and a 20/20 interview from 1978. For my money, though, the inclusion of the “Saturday Night Live” stuff is the best of the bonus material. Not only do we get the musical performances, but also a skit featuring Jagger “interviewed” by an in character Dan Aykroyd.  This is an all around classy release and I like it a lot.
