From Straight to Bizarre-Zappa, Beefheart, Alice Cooper, and LA's Lunatic Fringe DVD

Review by Gary Hill

Frank Zappa might not have been the first or last artist to form his own record label and sign new acts. His label, though, was arguably one of the most intriguing. It was really about music that many would consider “strange.” Although the label didn’t survive, its story, as told in this documentary, is an interesting tale. Perhaps the best thing about this documentary is the vintage clips (most notably of Alice Cooper) but overall it’s a worthwhile experience for the whole duration. I’d heartily recommend this one to fans of Zappa, Cooper or any of the other acts on Zappa’s label. In addition, I’d suggest aspiring music business people check it out or anyone with an interest in that period of the music scene. It might not be perfect, but it’s pretty darned cool.
