Jeff Healey

Band – Live in Belgium DVD

Review by Gary Hill

Jeff Healey was incredibly talented. Just watching the man it’s obvious that his guitar technique was unique. That meant his sound was, too. The performance is strong and soulful, but in some ways the hit “Angel Eyes” seems like it doesn’t belong. I mean, it almost feels like it could have been a ballad from a 1980s hair metal band. Healey’s version of the Doors’ “Roadhouse Blues,” as immortalized in the film “Roadhouse” smokes. While I like the guitar on his cover of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” I think he lost some of the magic on the vocals. The video and audio on this release are both quite good. In addition, the fact that they include both a DVD and an audio CD of the same show is a great touch.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2012  Volume 3 at lulu.com/strangesound.
