Joe Satriani

Satchurated – Live In Montreal BluRay

Review by Gary Hill

If you're a fan of Joe Satriani concert videos (a commodity of which I feel there is not enough) there is really no way you can knock this, as it actually manages to top (or at least rival) them all. It is as good as his DVD release to date, which is the San Franciso performance that was released just over a decade ago. That is not to say his performance level hasn't improved (because somehow it has), but that was such  good release that he actually managed to outdo himself here, if that is possible. One of the best things about this one, is that you can clearly see accumulation of influences brought to not only his newer tracks since then, but to the live performances of them, as well. It's amazing how much energy this iconic virtuoso displays in this Montreal performance. The BluRay certainly provides a truly superior visual and sound experience. The coverage here is second to none, as it contains a rather less multiplied effect that gives the viewer a much more comprehensive look at the stage production for all it's worth. The set list contains a perfect blend of old and new with tracks from Satriani’s early days right on through his most recent studio release. It might seem to be an overloaded and too adventurous a set that way for some, but this artist really isn't the 'less is more” variety of entertainer. Besides, not many can compete with him when it comes to that. I find this to slightly edge the rest in his live video catalog (as I mentioned before) and simply smoke the Paris release which I reviewed, as well. That is one thing I can opine about with no hesitation. Talk about killer, this aims to please any and all music lovers. Of course, that’s not easy to say, because I have to admit that he's not for everyone. Still, this manages to go a long way in proving otherwise.
