Eric Gales

Night on the Sunset Strip DVD/CD Set

Review by Gary Hill

I really wasn't sure if I should do this as a DVD review or CD one. Ultimately I chose to go with the video. This includes both a DVD of the concert and an audio CD of it. Both the audio and video are quite good here. This is kind of a power trio led by Eric Gales. One thing is very clear. The man can play guitar. At times he reminds me a bit of Jimi Hendrix. He's even left handed. At other times, it makes me think of Stevie Ray Vaughn. Overall, there is a lot of blues, funk and even some jazz mixed into the sound. We even get some scat singing. This is classy stuff. There is one big downside to the DVD. It's all about the navigation. There is no way to choose which song you want to listen to. You can't do it from a menu, and you can't forward from one track to another. The fast forward and rewind functions are the only navigation available. Still, as good as this show is, that's just more of a minor issue.
