Change Begins Within (A Benefit Concert for The David Lynch Foundation) DVD

Review by Gary Hill

I have to say that I don't support the cause for which this benefit was organized. That doesn't detract from the performance here, though. This concert has a lot of real stars from Paul McCartney (who gets the bulk of the stage time) to Ringo Starr, Sheryl Crow, Eddie Vedder, Ben Harper, Donovan and Moby.

The sound and video are both great. The video is almost two hours long with a number of interviews as bonus features. There are a number of highlights for me. The first of which is Eddie Vedder performing a tune with just his own mandolin as accompaniment. His duet with Ben Harper on Queen's "Under Pressure" is right up there, too.  That duet performance is worth the price of admission by itself.

I dig Sheryl Crow's take on "My Sweet Lord," too. Both she and Vedder join Ringo Starr for "Yellow Submarine." I'm a big fan of Donovan, too, so I was really looking forward to that performance. It was a bit of a disappointment, though, as he doesn't seem to be in the best form in this particular show.

For Beatles fanatics the reunion of McCartney and Starr is probably the real highlight here. Speaking of Paul McCartney, the man has really lost none of his shine. He pulls out a number of Wings tunes and Beatles songs and pulls them all off with incomparable style. His set is the longest by far. Essentially the rest of the show was building to that performance. It was a good choice as he really shines.
