Sonny Rollins

Saxophone Colossus DVD

Review by Gary Hill

This is a new DVD based around a vintage remastered film about Sonny Rollins. Rollins is a legend of jazz music. His saxophone playing is captured in this film, but that's not all that we get. The focus here it telling Rollins' story through interviews (with him and his wife/manager) along with clips and more. It's a great documentary and this is an excellent release of it. This also includes some cool bonus footage. All in all, I would recommend this to all fans of Rollins' music. I'd say that it would serve as a great introduction, too. All that said, since he's still out there performing, keep in mind that this is vintage Rollins rather than modern.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2017  Volume 6 at  garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2017.
