Muddy Waters

Live at Rockpalast DVD/CD set

Review by Gary Hill

This is one heck of a cool set. It includes a performance of Muddy Waters and his band from 1978 on the first DVD and CD. The second DVD and CD is a show from 1996 of the Muddy Waters tribute band (consisting of members of Waters' band).

I think it's cool to present these two sides of the same coin in one set. To include both DVD and CD of the shows is always a great touch. It's obvious from watching the first DVD that it was something recorded in the past. It's incredibly high quality for the time period, but the film is obviously something from that period of time.

The performance is purely on fire. They work through so many of Waters' classics. Not only do you get to see a classic performance of Waters in his prime, but his band even includes Pinetop Perkins, who shines as you'd expect. Then again, everyone in the band was on top of their game. Levon Helm shows up on stage as a guest singer during the show, too.

Overall, if you dig the blues, you will probably want to pick this up. It showcases a couple great performances. Not only that, but it's delivered in such a great configuration that it's a must have, really.
