Woody Guthrie: All-Star Tribute Concert 1970 DVD

Review by Gary Hill

In the modern era it might be fairly simple to overlook Woody Guthrie's contribution to music, but it would be unwise. The man really was responsible for writing so many folk standards and influencing a generation (or more) of performers. This DVD captures a live show from 1970 paying tribute to him. The lineup of musicians here is amazing by itself, from Pete Seeger to Guthrie's son Arlo, Joan Baez, Richie Havens, Odetta and so many more. They work their way through a number of his songs, in various configurations. Most likely you'll like some performances better than others, based on your own personal favorites. For me, Arlo Guthrie and Pete Seeger are the stars, but your mileage will surely vary. There are three bonus performances along with a short interview segment included as bonuses. This was a very interesting concert, and it's great to have it on home video to watch over and over again.
