Goth: Explore the History DVD

Review by Gary Hill

This documentary feels a little like a Wikipedia documentary, but it doesn't seem to be one. If you are unsure what that means, there are new documentaries that are made by using public domain video and images to accompany a synthetic voice reading Wikipedia articles.

The graphics part of this is clearly in line with that. The voice has some odd pronunciations at times that makes me think it is probably a text reader. The text itself doesn't seem to line up directly with the Wikipedia entry. I have to wonder if they used AI to write this, though. If they did I probably shouldn't review it. After an early embrace of some of that tech, I have rethought my stance and gone to a blanket rejection.

All in all, though, this gives an intriguing run-down of the culture and music associated with the Goth title. It's odd in that there are some small details pointed out, but in some other ways it's largely cursory and surface-oriented. Still, I found this to be informative and entertaining either way.
