Interviewed by Gary Hill
Interview with Oz Noy from 2007

MSJ: This interview is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2007 Volume 5 at lulu.com/strangesound.

Can you catch the readers up on your history?
I was born in Israel, Started to play guitar when I was 10. Between the ages of 13-15 I already started my professional career playing with artists and doing recording sessions. By the age of 24 after playing with a lot of the big artists in Israel and playing on the house band for a top TV show (like Letterman) I moved to NYC and started my career here.
MSJ: I know artists are not crazy about having their music pigeon-holed, but how would you describe your sound?
A true mix of Jazz , Rock, Funk, R&B. it's basically jazz to me but with other kinds of grooves behind it.
MSJ: What’s ahead for you?
My New Record Fuzzy is coming out Sept 12 2007, playing LA Oct 10, SF Oct 11 and touring in Japan Nov 20-29 , and, of course already thinking and writing the next record.
MSJ: Are there musicians you’d like to play with in the future?
Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, Jack De Johnette...Steve Wonder, Prince, James Taylor, Steely Dan, Tom Petty, Bryan Adams...
MSJ: Do you think that downloading of music is a help or hindrance to the careers of musicians?
It definitely helped new artists.
MSJ: It’s been said by the major labels that it’s essentially the heart of all the problems they are having in terms of lower sales – would you agree?
Yes. but they brought it on themselves with their bad business and judgment. It's just their karma hitting them back with what they've created.
MSJ: In a related question how do you feel about fans recording shows and trading them?
I've got no problem as long as they don't sell it.
MSJ: What was the last CD you bought, or what have you been listening to lately?
The latest Michael Brecker, John Scofield, Traveling Wilburys. Keith Jarrett...
MSJ: What about the last concert you attended for your enjoyment?
Paul Blay trio with Gary Picock and Paul Motion
MSJ: Finally, are there any closing thoughts you’d like to get out there?
Support music. Buy records and go see live music. Otherwise it's going to die slowly.
