Buckcherry

Interviewed by Gary Hill
Interview with Josh Todd of Buckcherry From 2009
MSJ: You guys are currently touring with Kiss - how did you hook that up?
We developed a relationship with Kiss on our first record. We did 24 shows in Europe, got to know them back then, and they asked us back for this special tour. Kiss liked that we are a rock n roll band and we've been doing it all these years, filling the void of rock n roll.
MSJ: What's it like to be doing shows with one of the biggest bands of all time?
The tour's been great- Kiss has an incredible production. It's a good package because of what we bring to the table with our style. The show can become a family affair, all these different generations going to see a great rock show.
MSJ: Have you had a lot of interaction with the guys in Kiss? If so, how has that been going?
After show festivities are very uneventful- Kiss leaves right after and they fly to the next show. We do the exact opposite- we stay ‘til the end of the show, and then drive to the next city.
MSJ: How are the fans treating you guys?
I've been checking the message boards and we're getting a great response and new fans! A lot of people didn't know Buckcherry before coming to see the show, and that's great.
MSJ: If you weren't involved in music, what do you think you'd be doing?
Good question- I would probably either be interested in doing something with criminology or training boxing or promoting boxing events.
MSJ: How would you describe the sound of Buckcherry?
We play timeless rock n roll - Aerosmith meets AC/DC.
MSJ: Are there musicians you'd like to play with in the future - either in terms of touring or in terms of side projects - or both?
There are definitely always bands we would like to tour with. I'm digging the new Alice n Chains record, and we'd love going out with them. Stone Temple Pilots as well. As far as collaborations- I would love to sing with Carrie Underwood, and as far as I've heard she's a Buckcherry fan!
MSJ: Do you think that downloading of music is a help or hindrance to the careers of musicians? It's been said by the major labels that it's essentially the heart of all the problems they are having in terms of lower sales – would you agree?
I don't think it really matters since that's what's going on now. The whole music business has changed - records aren't selling. There are not that many videos on TV anymore. Gold records are a big deal again. The key to being successful now is you have to be great live- it is a huge part of the business now. With the internet, there is a lot more music, and all of that is (in total) selling less.
MSJ: If you were to put together your ultimate band, who would be in it?
In my ultimate band? I would have the entire Revolution band, with me singing.
MSJ: What was the last CD you bought, or what have you been listening to lately?
I am really enjoying the new Maxwell record; I think it's amazing from beginning to end. It is a true R&B record- no tuned vocals, no autotune. I think he's a really talented singer and performer.
MSJ: What about the last concert you attended for your enjoyment?
Wow- a while ago, I saw Prince in Vegas when he was playing the Palm hotel. It was only a 900 capacity club and it was incredible.
