Doro

Interviewed by Greg Olma
Interview with Doro from 2007

You just came out with a new DVD called 20 Years: A Warrior Soul. Has this been in the works for a while?
Actually, it took a long time because we had to get all the rights cleared with all the record companies and their artists. We thought we would have something special on the DVD and not just the concert. We took somebody on the road for the Warrior Soul tour; we did this tour movie from Warrior Soul. It took a long time to do. We were trying to mix it in between gigs and festivals and doing the record. Then we had to talk to the record company about when would be a good time to release it. They don’t want to release it when the new release would come out, so this was actually perfect timing. In America, it came out much later than in Europe because we said we would love to have it come out when we are on tour.
MSJ: You are touring the US as a headliner for the first time in quite a few years. Why have you waited so long?
I think the climate for metal, our type of music, is pretty good which in the 90’s it wasn’t so good. All the records we made, and I think some of them were beautiful, didn’t come out here [in America] so it is hard to go on tour. The Dio tour was the first tour in a long time.
MSJ: You were 3rd on the bill.
Yeah, but it was worth it. It was so worth it. It was great seeing our friends again. The second tour we did was a co-headlining tour with Britny Fox and our drummer Johnny [Dee] played in both bands. That was very good. We changed every night; sometimes they were headliners, sometimes we were headliners. That was good too. Then we played a couple of festivals here in the states.
MSJ: How are the shows going on this tour? Are you getting good attendance?
Good, good. We are exactly in the middle of the tour. We just came from Canada the day before yesterday; Toronto and Montreal. It was awesome. Yesterday, Cleveland was awesome. We’re very happy.
MSJ: You have Chris Caffery from Savatage on guitar for this tour. How did that come about?
We have been friends for a long time. We worked together for a long time and he did some guest appearances on the DVD and some festivals in Europe. Our guitar player, who was still in the band, Joe [Taylor]; he left because of some personal problems. This tour, the finances are low money, so everybody had to see how to survive. And then Chris is opening up. He has a new record out so he’s happy and he plays in our band. His sound man Paul, he’s the keyboardist in Chris’ band and he’s our sound man. It worked out really good.
MSJ: You look and sound like you did in Warlock. How do you continue sounding as good as you did 20 years ago and do you have any special vocal techniques?
The love of doing it for the fans and for the music. It’s all that it takes. No special tricks. I appreciate it more now than I did in the 80’s because it was so huge. Metal was big and I thought it would keep going like that. When it fizzled out, you really had to rethink the whole thing; continue if you really wanted to do it. I always thought “I definitely want to do it.” Now that metal is getting more attention, in the last couple of years it’s gotten better and better, so now I really, really appreciate it much more.
MSJ: What’s next for Doro after this tour?
The 26th [of June] is the last date here in the states. Then we go to Europe and do all the summer festivals. There are some huge ones there; in Slovakia “Metal Camp,” which is a 5 day festival, it’s huge. It’s something like Wacken. We are due on the 29th in Czechoslovakia for a festival. The summer of festivals over there. We’ll be starting a new record. We might come back this year to do the second leg of this tour.
MSJ: Have you had any Spinal Tap moments on this tour yet?
We just got a photo the other day. The first couple of days we thought we had a tour bus but the tour bus never showed up. We had to go from gig to gig but it was tremendous trouble because we had 14 people. Johnny, the tour manager, was going crazy. The bus company said “no, it’s coming, it’s coming any minute” but the bus never showed up. So finally we had to change the company, now we have this bus. We just received a photo of the bus that we were supposed to get and it blew up. In the photo you can see smoke and fire, so it’s like “Thank God”. Whatever can happen, will happen. So the first couple of days were pretty rough.
MSJ: What was the last CD you purchased?
I think it was Rammstein.
MSJ: What was the last concert you attended as a fan?
It was a WASP concert in Germany. We toured together in England many, many years ago and actually I just went to see him in Frankfurt. It would be great to do another tour together.
MSJ: Any last words for your fans?
I love the fans more than anything in this world. I want to thank them for all the support and love all these years. I hope that we will rock many, many more years together.
