Paul Hare

Interviewed by Gary Hill
Interview with Paul Hare from 2009
MSJ: This interview is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2009  Volume 3 at lulu.com/strangesound.

Can you catch the readers up on your history?
I’ve spent the last year mainly, recording this album and now promotion.  I’m currently on CDBaby and I’m getting a lot of radio airplay and exposure from Europe, like the Netherlands and England. (I’m huge in Africa!)
MSJ: I know artists are not crazy about having their music pigeon-holed, but how would you describe your sound?
Lyrically Folk/Punk I’m musically a cross between Steve Earle and maybe Johnny Cash. Throw in a couple of pints of Roy Orbison and of course the 80s punk scene like The Clash and …
MSJ: What’s ahead for you?
My future consists of promotion, playing, booking, new album/repeat.....
MSJ: Are there musicians you’d like to play with in the future?
I'd love to play with Zoey Deshannel. She’s got an awesome voice and I’ve had a personal crush for years.....   Call me, Zoey.

If she says “no,” Shelby Lynn.....  uhh maybe Id take Shelby first.  If they say “no,” then Exene Cervenka from X!
MSJ: Do you think that downloading of music is a help or hindrance to the careers of musicians? It’s been said by the major labels that it’s essentially the heart of all the problems they are having in terms of lower sales – would you agree?
The idea to the average listener being able to download anything anytime for free sounds awesome (How much money I would have saved!) However for any form of art to survive there must be a form of financial feedback. If I don’t at least break even on this album it’s going to be a few years before I’ll be able to afford to record another. I’ll keep playing sure but that makes it equivalent to a "money pit that you ‘have’ to live in.”  What it will come down to if this problem is not eradicated is simply the big boys (major labels) will dictate what we can or cannot listen to based on being the only companies able to afford to put out new artists based strictly on merch sales, bad distribution deals and touring.  (Do we need anymore performing artists ala Celine Dion,  Britney Spears.....)

Besides, by simply downloading the hits you miss the brilliant B sides we may never have discovered if we had not listened to the entire album....

Live shows however are fair play the quality usually sucks and I’m not a hippie! Play on.
MSJ: If you were a superhero, what music person would be your arch-nemesis and why?
Who’s that producer of American Idol, with his sidekick Little Evil MTV.
MSJ: If you were to put together your ultimate band, who would be in it?
Ike Turner, Clarence Clemens,  Dimebag Daryl  and Moby.... (Just to watch Moby's face)
MSJ: If you were in charge of assembling a music festival and wanted it to be the ultimate one from your point of view, who would be playing?
I would have $1 music festival, invite all the big wigs make it an open mike and rotten fruit for $1.
MSJ: What about the last concert you attended for your enjoyment?
I caught Steve Earle at the Vic in Chicago.  It was a nice personal acoustic show.   Id like to see the Cross Canadian Ragweed next.
MSJ: Now, this one some love, some hate. Feel free to not answer if you don’t care to. What has been your biggest Spinal Tap moment?
Oh,  I know this one right away, In spite of all the dumb things I’ve done, (tripping on stage and landing on a table of bikers)the worst has to be the  time we were recording in and it was pouring outside the studio so we were smoking in the backroom and I got called to do a vocal in the sound room. Well after a couple of takes we noticed a warm orange grow flickering in the rear. I dropped a lit cigarette in the rubbish bin and well.... can’t record there anymore.
MSJ: Finally, are there any closing thoughts you’d like to get out there?
"A hero only means you left, before we got tired of you"
