Oz Noy

Interviewed by Gary Hill
Interview with Oz Noy from 2009
MSJ: It’s been a while since we chatted can you catch us up on what’s been going on in your world?
I've got a new record out. It’s called “Schizophrenic”(just came out this September) and features Will Lee, Anton Fig, Keith Carlock, Dave Weckl, Steve Lukather, Ricky Peterson....

I'm still doing my regular Monday night at the Bitter End with my band. Doing some touring to support the new album-just came back from the west coast, Austin, Nashville, going to Japan in November.
MSJ: If you weren't involved in music, what do you think you'd be doing?

Nothing

MSJ:

I've got this new project that I started called "The Oz Noy Twisted  Blues Band," it’s more on the bluesish side. I'm real excited about it... and just the regular stuff, doing side man work in NYC.

MSJ:

Smooth jazz! It’s hard to choose one person, there's more than a few unfortunately. I think that genre took jazz and music in general to such lows. It’s a shame. It doesn't have to be that way, there are some good musicians that are doing it and I don't think they had to go that low to make the money; they could have still kept the level high. The same goes for American Idol but in a deferent way. They totally destroyed the chances of real artist to get to the mainstream and get there music out.

MSJ:

If you were to put together your ultimate band, who would be in it?

That’s a hard question cause there so many musicians I love and would love to play with! I'll list the ones I never played with:

Drums- Tony Williams, Steve Gadd, Jeff Porcaro, Jack DeJohnette

Bass- Jaco Pastorius, Marcus Miller, James Jamerson

Keys- Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett (although I would never dare to play a note with him!), Thelonius Monk, Bud Powell

Horns- Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Michael Brecker.

MSJ:

If you were in charge of assembling a music festival and wanted it to be the ultimate one from your point of view, who would be playing?

Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, Keith Jarrett, Miles Davis, John McLaughlin, Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Allan Holdswoth
MSJ:

What was the last CD you bought, or what have you been listening to lately?

Daniel Lanois- Here is What Is - I listen to everything from cheesy pop to Jazz.

MSJ:

What about the last concert you attended for your enjoyment?

Leonard Cohen

MSJ:

Finally, are there any closing thoughts you’d like to get out there?

Have people buy music and support live music!
