Old Sea Brigade

Old Sea Brigade

Review by Gary Hill

This set is unusual. I suppose the underlying factor here, more than anything else, is sort of a folk rock vibe. There are a lot of layers bringing other elements into being, though. Although, I think this music might have a tendency toward feeling “samey,” it never becomes a problem here as this set is short enough to come in, get the job done and never really repeat itself. This is unique and quite cool.

Track by Track Review
Love Brought Weight

Atmospherics open this track. Intricate acoustic guitar joins from there. As the vocals and other elements join it becomes a lush and very powerfully pretty song.

Better Days
With a more rocking sound, this has elements of alternative rock, space music and shoegaze. It’s another real winner.
Georgia
This slower song feels deconstructed and rather minimal. The piano creates some nice melodies, though, and the vocals sell it. It’s an unusual, but effective, piece of music.
Sleep in the Park
Dreamy, atmospheric textures are laid over the outside of this piece. Beyond that, it’s a rather minimalist and folk based song. It’s quite a sad one, too.
Towns
This is also built around a folk song structure. The added layers are similar to ther pieces here, but the song is unique.
