Rebel ACA & French Monkey Wrench

John Wayne (digital single)

Review by Gary Hill

When I reviewed the previous single from this act (in this same issue), I said that I'd like to hear more from them. Well, shortly after completing that review I got this opportunity. If anything, this cut is even more creative and unusual than the previous one was.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2018  Volume 2 at  garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2018.

Track by Track Review
John Wayne
This starts with an instrumental movement that has a lot of prog stylings in the mix. It works from there to a cool rock music element with a rap for the vocals. As it works out at times we're brought into a sound that makes me think of David Bowie. This thing keeps shifting and changing and growing, though. There are definitely parts of this that fit well under the "progressive music" vein, but I wouldn't put the whole song there. As unusual as this is, it's somehow oddly compelling and infectious, too.
