Patrick Ames

You Make Me Scream (digital single)

Review by Gary Hill

I've previously reviewed other projects from Patrick Ames. This new single showcases a lot of the kinds of sounds I've heard from him in the past, while still feeling fresh and new. This is set very much in a mode that reflects classic music while also updating the sound. It's fresh and yet timeless. It's also quite strong.

This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) form in Music Street Journal: 2020  Volume 5. More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2020.

You Make Me Scream
There is a trippy sort of electronic introduction here. It works out to a soulful blues jam from there. I'm reminded of Tom Petty (but a bit lower register) on the vocals. The musical arrangement has a bit of a Grateful Dead thing going on. The female backing vocals call to mind the Stones to some degree. It all works together to create a modern tune with a classic texture.
