Erich Mrak

No Ways (digital single)

Review by Gary Hill

Erich Mrak has been releasing quite a stream of singles. His music tends to be high quality with a pop and soul sound. While this one is good, it's the first that I thought was over-produced in the vocal department. That nearly sank this one for me, but the music and hooks are strong enough for it to survive that shortcoming. I should note that a lot of modern pop features those over-processed vocals, so people do like them. I just have a hunch that songs like that are going to sound so dated down the road a few years. As I said, this still manages to be effective. It could have been better with a less heavy hand on the processing, though.

This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) form in Music Street Journal: 2020  Volume 6. More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2020.

Track by Track Review
No Ways
Some cool jazzy guitar brings this song into being. As the cut works out to a soulful groove from there, the vocals that come over the top are very over-produced. It's to the point of being an annoyance. The verse vocals are a bit less produced. That's a good thing. They are still too heavily produced, but it's more acceptable to me. This song works despite the production on the vocals, though, because it's such a classy groove.
