CUSPS

Out for Blood

Review by Gary Hill

This is unusual and intriguing music. It's definitely not prog in any traditional sense, but it is decidedly art rock based. That lands it under prog at Music Street Journal. This is modern music, but it does at times have leanings that call to mind older things, too. I can't imagine that you have ever heard anything exactly like this. It is genre-bending and exceptionally interesting with a lot of electronic sound in the mix.

This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) form in Music Street Journal: 2023  Volume 1. More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2023.

Track by Track Review
Shrapnel
Coming in percussive, this works out a driving kind of techno meets art music vibe. There is an electronic angle to the cut. It has some intriguing twists and turns and reminds me a little of things like The Prodigy or even Public Image Limited.
thenineedto...
Much more electronic and sedate, this definitely fits under art rock. It's also prog-like. This still manages to have some modern sounds that feel almost hip hop like.
Out for Blood
Here we get a track that probably lands somewhere between the first two in terms of intensity. It's definitely art music, though. It calls to mind Peter Gabriel to some definite degree.
Brainiac
Now, there is a bit of a punky edge to this. It's closer to the rocking opener than the previous few cuts were/ Yet, it's still decidedly artsy.
Liquid City
I dig the prominent bass sound on this. The cut is another artsy tune, but it also has a definite post punk angle to it.
Zoo
I dig the driving, yet somewhat subdued, energy of this number. It's more percussive based, but it's no less art-music oriented.
Activated
There is a more rhythmic groove to this. It's still an artistic piece of style, though.
