Ray Charles

Live at Montreux 1997 DVD

Review by Gary Hill

Here we have a DVD from the Live at Montreux series of an artist who lives up the “Montreux Jazz Festival” title. I know, I frequently poke fun at the misnomer of this festival, but it’s good to see one that’s actually true to that musical genre. The truth is, it’s also some great jazz from a real artist. Watching this video it’s obvious why so many people have held Mr. Charles in such high regard for such long. The man was a real professional and he surrounded himself with top-notch musicians to provide a killer concert experience. The sound and video on this set are both excellent and this one would be a fine addition to any Ray Charles fan’s collection, but it would also be an excellent introduction to this legendary performer’s work.
