Aural Amphetamine: Metallica And The Dawn Of Thrash DVD

Review by Gary Hill

The first thing the observant reader will notice is that the review of this DVD is included under "Various Artists" rather than under "Metallica." There is a good reason for this. Despite the fact the Metallica is featured on the cover and in the title, this is really more of an overview of the thrash genre than it is an insight into just Metallica. Yes, Metallica is at the heart of a lot of this DVD. They should be because they were a huge part of the beginnings of the genre. The first mention of Metallica, though, isn't til about halfway through the video. So, those picking this up as a documentary on Metallica might be disappointed.

So, what do you get with this item. Well, it's a good overview of a lot of the history of thrash. There are some cool interview clips and even the most well-informed thrash fan will probably learn something they didn't know - or at least didn't remember. The only real problem is that the video seems to lack direction a bit. It comes across more as a scattershot approach than a cohesive linear path. Still, as much insight as this sheds on an important genre, it's well worth checking out.
