Heads Up 2007 DVD

Review by Gary Hill

I’ve got to admit that some of the Christian rock thing leaves me perplexed. I can’t help but think of the second Spinal Tap movie and the reference to the “Monsters of Jesus” tour. Well, this DVD is in one aspect cut from that type of cloth. The event here is put together by “Drummers for Jesus” and it’s essentially a drumming competition. The thing is, if you can ignore this connection (assuming you see it as problematically as I do), there is some great music here. It’s mostly of a jazz/R & B type of sound, but it’s all quite strong. With some choice drummers on hand (Tommy Aldridge being the biggest name from my musical world) you get some killer percussion. I love the fact that the lyrical message and the fact that it’s a drumming competition never overwhelm the music. This is first and foremost a killer concert. I recommend it for percussion fans. I also recommend it for those who are into inspirational Christian music. But I’d also give a thumbs up for anyone who enjoys great live music.
