There are those who say that Mile Davis’ music in his later years wasn’t good. They also say that he played very little in concert. Let this excellent DVD (recorded four years before his death) show just how wrong they are. Sure, the music here draws from the funk and soul that had permeated popular music since Davis emerged. But that isn’t necessarily a negative. An artists needs to expand and build or his music stagnates. As to Davis not playing – uh – it’s just plain ridiculous and it doesn’t take much of this video to make that clear.
All in all this is an excellent performance and a great record of it. The videography is quite good and we get some cool interview segments to round things out. I just can’t really come up with any negatives about this one. Yes, it’s that good.
