Jeff Healey

and the Jazz Wizards – Beautiful Noise DVD

Review by Gary Hill

If you know Jeff Healey as a blues guitarist and singer, prepare to have your head rearranged. This is a great live DVD featuring Healey playing jazz. And, don’t just restrict the man to guitar either. Sure, he plays a very mean guitar, but he also shows that he had a talent for trumpet playing. This is very much traditional jazz. It’s also incredibly tasty. There are also little snippets of interview here and there. Of course, therein lies the rub. This is a fairly common practice on DVD’s these days, throwing bits of interview between the songs. While it’s an interesting layout, I really wish when producers put together DVD’s like this they would give you an option to play the DVD without the interview segments. They really mess up the whole flow of the thing when you just want to experience the concert type show. Also, in this case there are some bonus songs included. It would have been nice if they gave you a menu option that would evade the interview bits and include the bonus tracks in the standard flow of things. Still, this is a cool DVD and a nice tribute to the man.
