Leonard Cohen

Bird on a Wire DVD

Review by Gary Hill

There was a day when real movies about musicians were fairly common. This film, centering around Leonard Cohen’s 1972 tour comes from those days. It’s a high quality documentary that, while not giving the retrospective type overview that Lonesome Heroes did, provides a look into the mind of the artist. It’s not all happy, but it’s all interesting and captivating. I highly recommend this film not only to fans of Cohen, but to anyone who is interested in stories of people who are driven by their art. It gives a rare look into the man’s psyche, delving much deeper than the surface level where most such movies are content to dwell. Even in those heady days of music documentaries, this one had to have stood above the pack.
