Frank Zappa

A Token of His Extreme DVD

Review by Gary Hill

I would recommend this DVD as highly as I could recommend anything. It is amazing! If you (like me) never got to see Frank Zappa live, you must see this video. It is not optional. Those who have seen Zappa live probably have already purchased this because they know the treat that’s in store. I’ve always been amazed at the musical skill involved in Zappa’s music and how it’s presented with a total sense of humor. That is quite evident here. The arrangements and sharp turns in the music show just how well rehearsed and tight this band was. This concert was presented as a television special and it features some cool claymation at points. Considering this was filmed in the mid 1970s, the sound and video are exceptionally good. I have to say that of the bonus material the footage of Zappa on the Mike Douglas show is great. All in all, this is a mandatory purchase as far as I’m concerned.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2013  Volume 4 at lulu.com/strangesound.
