George Benson

Absolutely Live DVD

Review by Gary Hill

I’ve chatted with some jazz purists who really don’t think highly of George Benson, chalking him up as pop leaning soft jazz. I can see their point to a degree, but I think they are really missing out. This DVD showcases a jazz artist who plays it along the smooth lines of musical territory but still manages to create a killer sound. We get a live performance that purely entertains. The video dates back to earlier eras of technology. So, it’s not up to modern standards, but it’s still quite good. The sound on this release is excellent. One thing I’ve learned from looking about is that this is a re-release of an earlier version (with new packaging). If you’ve got that older version there probably isn’t any good reason to upgrade to the new one. This is really not altered in any appreciable way. What you get here is a great concert performance from a man who is both an excellent entertainer and a great guitarist. This should please all hardcore fans of Benson, but they probably already have it. For those who haven’t really given the man a chance, pick this one up and enjoy. You won’t be disappointed.
