Uriah Heep
Live in Portland, Oregon, April 2018
Review by Larry Toering
It has been a long time coming for Uriah Heep in Portland, having not appeared here since 1993. This was a very rare, and very enlightening experience to say the least. I’ve always respected and loved this band and almost every member within and the outside projects they’ve all done over the years. Still, I never got the whole picture until I finally saw them live, and what a show they put on. I can’t say enough about how good it really was, as I’m still taking in the memory of it weeks later.

They hit the stage with "Gypsy," and I was completely blown off my feet, so much that I couldn’t stop shooting photos at any rate because they’re also very visual performers. I truly expected this concert to just catch me up with them and end with the satisfaction of that, but they simply proceeded to fry every fan in the house. The vocals of Bernie Shaw are so impressive that I had to tell him so after the show. To that he replied, “Yeah, there’s no backing tapes here, mate.”

They ran through the classics which everyone knew and gave some of the newer stuff time to shine around it all, as it did so well. It’s hard to actually describe how awesome it was from beginning to end, with all kinds of great stuff played from "July Morning" and "The Magician’s Birthday," to their standards like "Easy Livin'" and "Stealin’." Really, though it was the overall freshness they bring that really made the show a spectacular event worth seeing.

You never know how these things are going to go with older bands you’ve not yet had the chance to see, but I’m happy to say I enjoyed this concert with every fiber of my being. In fact, I enjoyed this so much that I’ve been kicking myself for missing that 1993 appearance. If I hadn’t, I’d be a die- hard fan by the time this show came around. Mick Box and Company are simply out of sight. Do not miss this band on tour. It’s a highly recommended show. |
