Metal Evolution DVD

Review by Greg Olma

This DVD set was originally aired on VH-1 as a serie,s but I’m glad they put it out for purchase because I doubt this will ever be replayed.  MTV and VH-1 have moved away from music and into other programming which is a shame because (like the Behind The Music series) this group of shows was (is) well worth viewing multiple times.  You may remember Sam Dunn from Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey and the Rush documentary Behind The Lighted Stage.  Unlike those pieces which are films, Metal Evolution is a series that focuses on a particular genre within metal.  Just like Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey, the series takes a look at these sub-genres with an anthropological slant.  Dunn starts off with “Pre-Metal” and moves along through “NWOBHM," “Thrash," all the way to “Grunge” and “Nu-Metal."  Each episode is filled with artists who were there and helped create their little world of metal.  While the usual players are featured like Kiss, Iron Maiden, and Rush, other acts get a fair amount of screen time as well like Mastodon, Rammstein, Rage Against the Machine.  Even though a lot of music and material is covered in each series, it is by no means complete, but what is presented is well thought-out and researched.  If you have seen Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey, then Metal Evolution is a great companion piece to that documentary.
