Nancy Wilson (jazz)
Great Women Singers: Nancy Wilson - Live at the Blues Alley, Washington, D.C. DVD
Review by Gary Hill
I mentioned in my review of the Abbey Lincoln video from this series that I am not all that familiar with a lot of jazz singers. Nancy Wilson is clearly one of the exceptions. She was a legendary performer, and you'd have to be living under a rock for a long time to not have heard of her.
This live video really demonstrates why she was so legendary. Her vocals skills were amazing. She called herself a "song stylist," and she really does make every song her own. Her talent shines through on every tune, too.
The show is only an hour long, and there are no bonus features, but this live show is well worth having. I love how the instrumentalists get plenty of chances to smile, even though the star is Wilson.
This concert was recorded in 1993, and the video is what you'd expect from a pro-video of that era. It's good in terms of video quality, but not up to today's standards. The audio si exceptional, though. So is the performance. You just don't get much better than this.
