Progressive Rock CD Reviews
Aethellis - A Home In Your Thoughts
Review by Gary Hill
I have followed Aethellis for a very long time.
Leon Alvarado - The Changing Tide
Review by Gary Hill
You can count on Leon Alvarado to create quality music. I think he and his cast of musicians have outdone themselves this time.
Jon Anderson - & the Band Geeks - True
Review by Gary Hill
Among Yes fandom circles, this was one of the most anticipated album releases of the year.
Anyone - Miracles in the Nothingness
Review by Gary Hill
Anyone is essentially a one-man band with that man being Riz Story. This new album is a double disc set.
Peter Baumann - Phase By Phase: The Virgin Albums
Review by Gary Hill
Peter Baumann was a founding member of Tangerine Dream. This box set gathers up all his solo studio albums released on Virgin Records.
Jim Capaldi - The Outside Years
Review by Gary Hill
I've included this album under progressive rock largely because of Jim Capaldi's tenure in Traffic. That said, there are proggy things here.
Circuline - C.O.R.E.
Review by Gary Hill
I have liked every Circuline album I've ever heard. This one might be the best yet. Their sound has grown immensely.
Eloy - Destination
Review by Gary Hill
This is a reissue of a 1992 album from Eloy. This disc found the progressive rock side of the band a little further back in the mix.
Gerald Gradwohl - ... Or What?
Review by Gary Hill
I previously reviewed a set from the Gerald Gradwohl Group.
Jade Warrior - Borne On The Solar Wind: The Vertigo Albums
Review by Gary Hill
This new set gathers up the first three Jade Warrior albums and releases them as a three-CD package. The group's sound on those disc was decidedly artsy, unique and progressive rock based.
The Laconic - Ascension
Review by Gary Hill
"Melodic instrumental progressive rock" is a good description for the music contained here. There is pretty solid range within that heading, though.
Last Charge of the Light Horse - In The Wind
Review by Gary Hill
I have reviewed several albums from Last Charge of the Light Brigade. Usually I land them under progressive rock, as I have done here.
John Lee’s Barclay James Harvest - Philharmonic! The Orchestral Concert
Review by Gary Hill
This a concert in two parts presented on four discs. The first two discs are audio CDs.
Living in Shadows - Living In Shadows
Review by Gary Hill
I recently reviewed the latest album from this act. I talked about how much I loved their artistry at combining jazz and progressive rock into something very compelling.
Mandoki Soulmates - A Memory Of Our Future
Review by Gary Hill
The list of guests here is impressive. And, there are times when those guests are very apparent in the music.
PAKT - No Steps Left To Trace
Review by Gary Hill
PAKT is an amazing group of musicians. The band is made up of Percy Jones (bass and samples), Alex Skolnick (guitars), Kenny Grohowski (drums) and Tim Motzer (guitars and electronics).
Anthony Phillips - Slow Dance - 2 CD Edition
Review by Gary Hill
There is also a three disc edition of this album, which I previously reviewed.
Refestramus - Intourist
Review by Gary Hill
I have no problem putting this disc under the progressive rock heading, but they definitely stretch beyond what many might consider the classic limits of that sound to be.
Renaissance - Can You Hear Me Broadcasts 1974-1978
Review by Gary Hill
Renaissance really never rose to the level of some of the giants of progressive rock. I think that's a bit of a crime, really.
The Residents - Demons Dance Alone: 3CD pREServed Edition
Review by Gary Hill
I always say that The Residents are definitely not for everyone. I happen to love them, but I get why some don't.
Rush - Moving Pictures (40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)
Review by Greg Olma
In February of 1981, Rush released their biggest selling record and one that seems to have captured the ears of many rock fans.
Stackridge - The Forbidden City (2-CD/DVD Box Set Edition)
Review by Gary Hill
Stackridge's sound is often built around folk music, older British sounds and more. Yet there is plenty of progressive rock at play.
Weather Report - 1983
Review by Gary Hill
There are definitely some issues with the packaging on this. The title is "1983," but the picture inside the gatefold includes Jaco Pastorius who was out of the group in 1982.
Metal/Prog Metal CD Reviews
Metal Witch - Tales from the Underground
Review by Gary Hill
While this CD was released in May of this year, from what I can tell the album originally hit shelves eight or so years ago. This is potent metal.
The Raging Project - Future Days
Review by Gary Hill
This new release from this French act might not be a completely tight fit under heavy metal. I've even seen them described as progressive rock.
Tarot - Glimpse of the Dawn
Review by Gary Hill
These guys are getting pushed as a progressive rock band. There are some parts that have prog leanings for sure. I just don't see that label fitting, though.
TKO - Total Knock Out: The Complete TKO
Review by Gary Hill
This band might not be a tight fit under heavy metal. A lot of times they are closer to Nazareth style hard rock. In fact, a lot of this really does sound like Nazareth to me.
Tröjan - The Complete Tröjan & Taliön Recordings – 84 – 90, 5CD Box Set
Review by Gary Hill
This collection of recordings from speed metal band Tröjan is unusual. First, I need to apologize for the cover photo I've used.
Waysted - Won't Get Out Alive: Waysted Volume One 1983-1986
Review by Gary Hill
Perhaps this album doesn't actually fit under metal. I would say that it belongs there as much as any pop metal or hair metal does.
Non-Prog CD Reviews
Sarah Burton - Swoonville, USA
Review by Gary Hill
I previously reviewed another set from this act. I said that the release had some strong music, but that there wasn't enough variety, making it feel a little samey at times.
The Byron Band - Featuring David Byron & Robin George - On The Rocks... Again
Review by Gary Hill
David Byron will always be known for his tenure in Uriah Heep. He was the lead singer on their first ten albums, spanning the years 1970 to 1976.
Collective Soul - Here to Eternity
Review by Gary Hill
Collective Soul definitely know how to craft catchy rock music. This new set features 20 songs.
DownTown Mystic - Better Day (Digital 45)
Review by Gary Hill
This music fits into the fine tradition of classic rock sound. There is a good helping of variety among the three songs here.
Foghat - Slow Ride - Live in Concert (Deluxe Edition CD + DVD)
Review by Gary Hill
I previously reviewed the Blu-Ray edition of this. Here we have an audio CD with a DVD that's essentially the same as a bonus.
Edison Herbert - All I Need
Review by Gary Hill
I have to admit that this smoother, more traditional jazz is not my favorite type of jazz. I generally go in for things that lean toward the more crazed end of things and fusion.
Midwest Dilemma - Searching For The Cure For Loneliness
Review by Gary Hill
This set is varied and intriguing. The sound is at times quite folk based.
Powerman 5000 - Abandon Ship
Review by Gary Hill
To a good degree you know what you are going to get when you listen to Powerman 5000,
Sado-Domestics - Camouflage: Stories by T.J. Gerlach
Review by Gary Hill
The mix of sounds on this collection is intriguing. There is a lot of roots music here, but this also stretches toward art sounds and more.
UFO - Covenant - Sharks
Review by Gary Hill
This three CD set assembles two UFO releases from the first part of the 21st century and adds a live disc to fill out the discs.
Various Artists - Get Ready for A Groovy and Bluesy Christmas
Review by Gary Hill
The title of this album pretty well tells you what you will find here. I really like the mix of music on this one a lot.
Various Artists - Heavy Kraut! Vol. 1: Wie Der Hardrock Nach Deutschland Kam, 1970-1976
Review by Gary Hill
This collection of music from German artists has some strong stuff on it. There are some tracks that really stand out, but nothing here is what I would call weak.
Various Artists - Road Hawg! 33 Motorcycle Street Beats
Review by Gary Hill
Bear Family Records produces some interesting compilations. This is one of the more intriguing ones.
Various Artists - That’ll Flat Git It! Vol. 42
Review by Gary Hill
I have reviewed quite a few of this series, and there is a decent range of music from one collection to another. This set gathers up songs from King and Federal record labels.
DVD/Video Reviews
America - America & Friends – Live At The Ventura Theater Blu-Ray
Review by Gary Hill
My biggest complaint about this has to do with that “and friends” part of the titling.
John Mayall - John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers - Up Close And Personal: Live In Texas Blu-Ray
Review by Gary Hill
When you talk about British blues, John Mayall has to be at the center of that conversation. This Blu-Ray finds Mayall in fine form.
Nazareth - The Fool Circle Tour 1981 Blu-Ray
Review by Gary Hill
I have been a big fan of Nazareth for many years. I saw them live quite a few times over the years. I think I might have seen the exact tour from which these performances were pulled.
Todd Rundgren - Todd Live Blu-Ray
Review by Gary Hill
This is a concert film from 2010. In the live performance captured here, Todd Rundgren and his band play his 1974 Todd album in it entirety.
UFO - Showtime Blu-Ray
Review by Gary Hill
This concert film is amazing. It’s from the band’s 2005 tour, and they were absolutely on fire.

Concert Reviews
King Diamond - Live in Houston, Texas, October 2024
Review by Greg Olma
King Diamond is back and I could not be happier!  It has been quite a while since I saw King Diamond as a solo artist.
Overkill - Live in Houston, Texas, October 2024
Review by Greg Olma
I was lucky enough to catch Overkill on their headlining tour for Scorched last year.  Never ones to rest, the band continued their tour in support of Scorched by being the opening act for King Diamond.
