Progressive Rock CD Reviews
Agitation Free - Last (new edition)
Review by Gary Hill
Here we have a brand-new edition of a 1976 album from Agitation Free. I dig the gatefold sleeve on this and the booklet is a great touch, too.
Randy Armstrong - Echoes of Tomorrow
Review by Gary Hill
The guitar work is the shining star of this disc, but it’s meant to be. All the music here is instrumental.
Lena Bloch - Marina
Review by Gary Hill
You can be sure of a few things when Lena Bloch is involved. First, you know it’s going to be jazz or jazz adjacent.
Canvas of Silence - As the World Tree Fell
Review by Gary Hill
This could probably fit under heavy metal. I thought about putting it there.
Church Burglars - Welcome to Dreamland
Review by Gary Hill
This is clearly not old school progressive rock. I’d argue that it fits under the prog heading, though.
Deep Energy Orchestra - The Science of Sound
Review by Gary Hill
This is the third set I’ve reviewed from this act. I think it might be the best of the three.
Dwiki Dharmawan - Anagnorisis
Review by Gary Hill
This is the fourth release from Dwiki Dharmawan that I have reviewed.
Dream Theater - A View From The Top Of The World
Review by Greg Olma
2021 saw the release of Dream Theater’s A View From The Top Of The World, which was also the last studio album featuring Mike Mangini on drums.
Ego On The Rocks - Acid In Wounderland
Review by Gary Hill
This is a remastered and expanded edition of an album that was originally released in 1980. The group is a due made up of Jürgen Rosenthal and Detlev Schmidtchen.
Eloy - Reincarnation on Stage
Review by John Pierpoint
This is an excellent live double-CD from Eloy, recorded during their 2012-2013 tour and released in 2014.
Euphoria Station - Smoking Gun
Review by Gary Hill
This act is billed as progressive rock. Based on this album, I’m not sure I completely agree with that assessment.
5th Season - Live
Review by Gary Hill
These guys are considered a prog band. I can see that. This is more melodic progressive rock, though.
Noah Haidu - Standards III
Review by Gary Hill
The second release I’ve reviewed from this artist, this is very much the same kind of music as that first one.
Gary Husband - Postcards From The Past
Review by Gary Hill
This double CD set is a collection from the archives of Gary Husband. He’s known primarily as a drummer and keyboardist, but he also plays guitar on some of the music here.
Javon Jackson - Jackson Plays Dylan
Review by Gary Hill
I previously reviewed another set from Javon Jackson. I landed that one under prog, which is one of the reasons I’m putting this one there.
Jethro Tull - In Concert
Review by Greg Olma
In 1991, Jethro Tull was still riding on the success that was started in 1987 with Crest Of A Knave.
Brian Landrus - Just When You Think You Know
Review by Gary Hill
Perhaps this would have been a better fit under non-prog.
The Last Dinner Party - Prelude to Ecstasy
Review by Gary Hill
This album was released in February of 2024. It was my top album pick for 2024. I absolutely love this disc.
Shawn Lovato - Biotec
Review by Gary Hill
This is an intriguing and unique release. It’s in a very real sense jazz, but it’s quite free-form and experimental.
Luke Marantz + Simon Jermyn - Echoes
Review by Gary Hill
This is an intriguing set. It’s all instrumental, and the two musicians whose names are included above are the main performers here.
Gabriella Martina - States
Review by Gary Hill
This is definitely art music. It has a lot of progressive rock in the mix.
Gregg McKella - Songs From The Underground
Review by Gary Hill
I’ve previously reviewed the band Paradise 9, and Gregg McKella is part of that outfit.
Nektar - A Tab in the Ocean, Deluxe Five Disc Limited Edition
Review by Gary Hill
This new box set is the latest remix of Nektar’s second album. This release includes four CDs and a Blu-Ray. Now, we get several different mixes of the main album.
The One - Lighter than Air
Review by Gary Hill
If you like modern progressive rock, don’t let this one get past you.
The Perc - Chapters & Suites – Electric Kindergarten Vol. 10
Review by Gary Hill
I have previously reviewed The Perc Meets the Hidden Gentleman quite a few times.
Red32 - Cryogenic Dreams
Review by Gary Hill
I previously reviewed another album from this act. This one is perhaps the stronger of the two.
Jussi Reijonen - sayr: kaiho – live in Helsinki
Review by Gary Hill
This is not progressive rock. In fact, it’s not rock at all.
Anton Roolaart - The Ballad of General Jupiter
Review by Gary Hill
I’ve known Anton Roolaart for years, so that probably factors into this review a little.
Ben Rosenblum Nebula Project - The Longest Way Round
Review by Gary Hill
This is the second album from this act I’ve reviewed.
Brandon Seabrook - Hellbent Daydream
Review by Gary Hill
This instrumental album definitely fits into the art music heading. I
L. Shankar - Answers
Review by Gary Hill
This is the fourth release from L. Shankar that I have reviewed. Like the others, I have landed this one under progressive rock.
Shouse - Jaded
Review by Gary Hill
Perhaps this isn’t the tightest fit under prog. In fact, I know it isn’t.
sunday works - Blue Kisses and the Greenest Green
Review by Gary Hill
This set is really intriguing. There is a great proggy, art music vibe at play through the whole thing.
3rd Ear Experience - The Twilight Sutra
Review by Gary Hill
I’ve been a big fan of all Robbi Robb’s projects over the years. 3rd Ear Experience is one of those projects, and this is their latest set.
3rd Ear Experience - The Twilight Sutra (double record vinyl set)
Review by Gary Hill
I’ve been a big fan of all Robbi Robb’s projects over the years. 3rd Ear Experience is one of those projects, and this is their latest set.
Vance Thompson - Lost and Found
Review by Gary Hill
This instrumental album might have been a better fit under non-prog.
John Vanore & Abstract Truth - Easter Island Suite
Review by Gary Hill
This is such an intriguing set. It features four extended pieces.
Vinyl Floor - Balancing Act
Review by Gary Hill
I have previously reviewed quite a few albums from this band.
Void Of Sleep - The Abyss Into Which We All Have To Stare
Review by Gary Hill
This is such an intriguing album.
Yes - Symphonic Live Blu-Ray + 2CD Collection
Review by Gary Hill
In 2001, Yes released the Magnification album.
Metal/Prog Metal CD Reviews
Firmament - For Centuries Alive
Review by Gary Hill
Firmament is a German band and this is their second album. I’ve seen comparisons to Thin Lizzy, Blue Öyster Cult, UFO and others.
Revenge - Night Danger
Review by Gary Hill
This is a speed metal powerhouse album. I have to say that I definitely like the music more than I do the vocals, though.
Soen - Reliance
Review by Gary Hill
This is the second album from this act that I’ve reviewed. Like that one, this is a little hard to categorize.
Tokyo Blade - Beware the Blade - Classic, Rare & Unreleased 1983 - 2025 - 4-CD Box Set
Review by Gary Hill
I have really become a fan of Tokyo Blade in recent years. They were originally part of the NWOBHM, but have evolved and persisted since then.
Non-Prog CD Reviews
Alias Wayne - Manifest Destiny (digital single)
Review by Gary Hill
This is the third Alias Wayne release I’ve reviewed. The other two were Eps, but this one is a single.
Armchair Boogie - Hard Time & Deadlines
Review by Gary Hill
This act from Madison, Wisconsin creates some interesting and unique music. It has a lot of bluegrass built into it.
Jeff Aug - Interim
Review by Gary Hill
I previously reviewed another set from Jeff Aug. Like that one, this is an instrumental release based mostly on acoustic guitar.
Jack Barksdale - Voices
Review by Gary Hill
This is the third set from Jack Barksdale that I’ve reviewed. It was also bit a shock coming into it.
Ted Brown - Solstice Canyon Loop
Review by Gary Hill
There are healthy helpings of country music in the mix on this album.
Dwight + Nicole - The Jaguar, The Raven, & The Snake
Review by Gary Hill
This is quite an intriguing set. Probably the biggest selling point is the vocals, but I almost hate to say that. That’s because it sells the musical arrangements short.
Enuff Z'nuff - Xtra Cherries
Review by Gary Hill
Enuff Z’nuff is one of the best power pop acts out there.
Kylie Fox - Sequoia
Review by Gary Hill
The music here borders on art music. At times it crosses into that zone.
Lynne Hanson - Just a Poet
Review by Gary Hill
This is the third album from Lynne Hanson that I’ve reviewed.
Lucy Isabel - All the Light
Review by Gary Hill
This is a strong release. It’s more or less a folk meets rock and pop release.
Jackdawg - Jackdawg
Review by Gary Hill
The three members of this band all have respectable pedigrees.
Peggy James - Till I Turn Blue
Review by Gary Hill
I’ve reviewed a couple sets from Peggy James.
Karney - One True Song
Review by Gary Hill
I have reviewed a lot of music from Karney over the years. She consistently puts out strong stuff.
Diane King - Sky
Review by Gary Hill
There is a lot of country music in the mix here, but it’s less downhome and more modern country. This also includes retro pop and more.
LA Guns - Leopard Skin
Review by Gary Hill
I’m going to avoid Guns ‘N’ Roses comparisons in this review. I’m sure anyone who knows who L.A. Guns are knows the connection.
The Magnolia Janes - The Light Years
Review by Gary Hill
Based in Nashville, The Magnolia Janes features the vocal harmonies of Sarah Bonsignore and Ashley Riley.
Moonsville Collective - A Hundred Highways
Review by Gary Hill
Hailing from Southern California, this band could pass for an act from Alabama or Mississippi.
MOTU - Awareness Or Illusion
Review by Gary Hill
This is the second release from MOTU I’ve reviewed. “MOTU” is the stage name for Richard Michelson.
The Raveonettes - Sing...
Review by Gary Hill
I have to admit that this set is my first introduction to the music of The Raveonettes.
Rags Rosenberg - Song of the Bricoleur
Review by Gary Hill
This is quite an intriguing album. The main vibe here is old-school folk music.
Michael Rudd - Going to the Mountain
Review by Gary Hill
There is some great music here. This is built around roots music and Americana, but there is some stylistic range.
Surrender Hill - River of Tears
Review by Gary Hill
I previously reviewed another set from this act.
T Bear - The Way of the World
Review by Gary Hill
If you like classic sounding, bluesy rock music with other types of mainstream rock sound in the mix, this is for you.
Julian Taylor - Pathways
Review by Gary Hill
I’ve now reviewed three discs from Julian Taylor. Following his evolution as a musician is interesting.
Tobacco & Rose - Tobacco & Rose
Review by Gary Hill
This is an intriguing release. It has a lot of folk music built into it.
Lori Triplett - When the Morning Comes
Review by Gary Hill
Lori Triplett is an artist who is based in Nashville.
Various Artists - Salsa de la Bahia: A Collection of Bay Area Salsa and Latin Jazz Vol 3: Renegade Queens
Review by Gary Hill
The title of this album sort of explains what it is. The music included here has a good range.
Various Artists - With A Little Help From My Friends: Covers Of The Beatles 1967-1970
Review by Gary Hill
The title of this set gives you a good idea of what you’ll get here. In fact, it nails it.
Michael Vincent - Sky Blue (C'mon, C'mon!)
Review by Gary Hill
I previously reviewed another set from Michael Vincent.
Waterworks Junction - Time Will Tell
Review by Gary Hill
This album is intriguing and effective.
DVD/Video Reviews
B. B. King - Live At The Royal Albert Hall 2011
Review by Gary Hill
This is sort of an oddity. Its main value is as a historic document.
The Moody Blues - Their Fully Authorized Story DVD
Review by Gary Hill
The documentary on this disc is well worth having. The main issue is that the title is deceptive.
Warrant - They Came from Hollywood DVD
Review by Gary Hill
I have to admit going into this that I was never really a fan of Warrant.
Yes - Their Definitive Fully Authorized Story DVD
Review by Gary Hill
This documentary was originally created in 1996, even though it’s just been released in this configuration.
