Aaliyah - Aaliyah Review by Gary Hill Coming almost 5 years after her previous release, this is the third album by Aaliyah. Tragically, it will also be the last since a plane crash claimed her life this summer. More
Thomas Abban's music provides an intriguing mix of modern alternative sounds and classic rock elements. His singing is dominated by a falsetto delivery that while effective, gets a bit old at times.
There is something to be said about knowing when enough is enough. When I reviewed Thomas Abban's previous release I said that it would have been stronger had some of the songs been left off.
ABC - Absolutely Review by Gary Hill ABC's blend of danceable pop really took over MTV for a year or two in the `80`s. This album is a compilation of many of their hits, some of them from that time period. More
If you take one look at the cover to this EP you will have a good idea of what the music is like. This group's sound is based on the pop rock of the 1960s.
D.G. Adams is a singer-songwriter, and this is his latest set. His sound most often lands in the neighborhood of folk rock, but there are exceptions to that rule.
There is a lot of electronic music built into this. Yet, it also has punk rock and at varying times calls to mind things like INXS, Depeche Mode and more.
This is a new album from this vintage band. Part of the 1980s hardcore movement, Adolescents broke up for a while before getting back together in 2001.
Aerial - Caught Inside the Circle CD EP Review by Bruce Stringer Texas based Aerial have started to draw attention to themselves with their recent Peter Gabriel support and CD EP, Caught Inside the Circle. With influences ranging from Michael Hedges (whose Aerial Boundaries was the inspiration behind their name) to The Sundays, Tori Amos to U2, and Sade to Depeche Mode Aerial have managed to produce a mature and positive sound that highlights the song writing duo of Julie Lange and Kell Curtis.

Aerosmith - Nine Lives Review by Gary Hill Aerosmith seem to have gone through several phases, musically, during their career. The early years marked a creative and charged vision. As time wore on, the band seemed to lose direction, both personally and musically. Once the original lineup reformed, there was a renewed energy in the band, but much of the work seemed rather formula. More
This is quite an interesting set combining soul music with electronic and hip hop in terms of overall sound. Beyond that, though, it leans toward jazz at times.
I have to admit right out of the gate that I am not the target audience for this release. The fact that it works as well as it does for me is really testament to the fact that it's strong.
This is a brand new single from a new artist Jordan Alexander. This kind of pop music isn't really my forte, but she does it with a more genuine texture than a lot of folks do.
Alias Wayne - Firebrand Review by Gary Hill I reviewed a different set from this artist in the previous issue of Music Street Journal. Alias Wayne is the solo project of Ranzel X Kendrick.

The main singers and songwriters of this project are husband and wife duo China and Seth Kent. While this outfit, to a large degree, is about that duo, there are other musicians here adding to the sound.
According to this group's press materials, they are focused on live performance. Given the material here, it's a good bet that their live shows are intense.
These guys clearly play alternative rock, but there is a lot more going on than that title reveals. For one thing, there is plenty of pop music and particularly 60s styled pop rock here.
American Zen - Level 1 - Peace of Mind Review by Gary Hill We're all familiar with Christian rock bands, but American Zen is most likely the first Buddhist rock band you've ever heard. They may well be the only one in existence.

I've previously reviewed other projects from Patrick Ames. This new single showcases a lot of the kinds of sounds I've heard from him in the past, while still feeling fresh and new.
Tori Amos - Scarlet's Walk Review by Gary Hill Tori Amos always produces quality albums and has never failed to entertain this listener for certain. This album is no exception.
Tori Amos - Boys For Pele Review by Gary Hill This album is yet another wonderful work from Tori Amos. Her style combines wonderful lyrics, that are at times a bit on the gritty side, with music that calls to mind Kate Bush, without copying her. More
Tori Amos - From the Choirgirl Hotel Review by Gary Hill It seems that every album that Tori Amos does is better than the previous release. Considering the quality of her albums, this has to be a difficult task. More
Tori Amos - Strange Little Girls Review by Gary Hill What an interesting decision and album this is. Amos this time chooses to record a collection of covers of other musician's songs rather than original material.

I have to say at the start of this review that in general I'm not a big fan of the over-produced pop music of today. I'm even less taken with processed vocals that seem so prevalent in this style of music.
Eric Anders - Eleven Nine Review by Gary Hill Let me discuss the scope of this review right off the bat. I'm a music journalist. That means that I am going to talk about the music here. More
I had thought about including this under progressive rock because of Jerry Goodman's inclusion here. The thing is, it's really mostly pure jazz - and not even fusion, really.
Angel really created an interesting sound for themselves in the 1970s. It was part hard rock, part catchy pop hooks, part glam and a lot of arena rock.
Antigone Rising - Traveling Circus Review by Gary Hill If you are a fan of classic rock, this album should be of interest to you. Antigone Gone lays down their own blend that at times calls to mind such diverse acts as Cream, The Allman Brothers, Joan Jett, The Who, The Ramones, the Cranberries and even the Dixie Chicks.

Apache Rose - Tiny Love (digital single) Review by Gary Hill This new single from Russian band Apache Rose shows off an intriguing style. The sound here has modern and classic rock elements merged into an effective piece of music.

It seems there is a whole school of alternative rock like this. It's the kind of music that's essentially based around singer/songwriter rock songs, but informed by a punk rock rawness and distorted edge.
India Arie - Acoustic Soul Review by Gary Hill With Acoustic Soul, India Arie has released a very strong debut. She shows that she has a great gift for song writing and musical and vocal performance.

The mix of sounds here ranges from folk singer/songwriter stuff to punk rock, psychedelia and more. Often one song will encompass more than one musical style.
This live album captures the Ataris delivering a sound that is part alternative rock, part punk, part emo and more. It's largely effective, but not all that unique.
The music on this album is so strong. It sits in a very timeless and classic rock motif. This is the kind of thing that would have been huge in the 1970s.
Average White Band - Greatest and Latest Review by Gary Hill I have to admit that while I am a avid prog and metal fanatic, R & B, soul and especially funk have a special place in my musical tastes. So, Average White Band, the guys responsible for the CLASSIC funk song "Pick Up The Pieces" fit well within that range.
