Clark Colborn’s Frank Made Me Do It is Available
Clark Colborn’s New EP Draws Inspiration from Frank Zappa
May 14th, Rockford, IL – The new EP from Clark Colborn is titled “Frank Made Me Do It.” The “Frank” of the title is Frank Zappa. The five-song set showcases the influence Zappa has had on the music of Clark Colborn over the years. The EP includes four original songs and one Frank Zappa song re-imagined by Colborn.
Clark Colborn says this about Zappa: “Frank Zappa's total musical fearlessness, sense of humor, and sense of absurdity totally captivated me when I was a teenager, and over the years he has been an influence on me in so many ways that it is hard to describe.” Colborn goes on to say, “I've never tried to be a clone of Frank or to write music that sounded like him. I have always tried to be me, and just let the principles Frank embraced guide me at times when I felt lost. This has led to musical compositions that didn’t really fit with most of what I do as a solo artist stylistically.” When it comes to this particular project, Colborn says, “I want my fans to hear how he has influenced me, so I put four of my songs that FZ inspired me to write, plus a cover of his immortal “My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama” together on this new EP. They are a little crazy, musically, lyrically, or both, but it is not my fault, really. Frank made me do it.”
Clark Colborn is an American rock guitarist, composer and recording artist. Born and raised not far from Chicago, Illinois, he has been a performing musician most of his life. Not following the beaten path is in his nature, and it shows in his guitar playing and his song writing. His adventurous and innovative disposition has made it hard to pigeon-hole his genre, yet his unique sound has garnered him fans of every variety. Colborn spent years on the stages of roadhouses & rock venues throughout the Midwest with bands such as Cheater, Blackjack, and Sleight of Hand, before stepping fully into the spotlight as a solo artist.
Early reviews are very positive. At Music Emissions (musicemissions.com) Kevin Sellers (Solitary Man) gave the set four and a half of a possible five stars. He said, “Frank Made Me Do It is…an infectiously unhinged and enjoyable EP.” He also said, “Zappa fans are, if my limited experience is telling it right, going to want Frank Made Me Do It in their collections. It seems so tuned into what the legend was all about that it makes you wonder whether or not Clark Colborn himself wasn't reaching beyond the grave for inspiration. I simultaneously want to go back and check out more from both Colburn and Zappa, which is considerable praise from somebody who previously didn't know the former existed, and somehow managed to avoid the legacy of the latter.”
In an upcoming review scheduled to run at Music Street Journal (musicstreetjournal.com), Jason Hillenburg says, “Clark Colborn's latest release, Frank Made Me Do It, is ostensibly a loving homage to legendary composer and musician Frank Zappa, but is really much more. Colborn never sets out to ape Zappa's style, but instead uses his music as inspiration for stretching out in thrilling, unpredictable ways. This is a tribute album in the purest sense of the word, an aural thank you filtered through Colborn's own unique musical consciousness.”
